The Road to a Long-Lasting Automobile

Auto technicians say the key to keeping vehicles running well-today and down the road-is routine maintenance. Yet many drivers tend to stall when it comes to keeping up with some everyday auto-basics. A recent survey by the Car Care Council found:

  • 38 percent of cars had low or dirty engine oil.
  • 54 percent had low tire pressure.
  • 28 percent had inadequate cooling protection.
  • 19 percent needed new belts.
  • 16 percent had dirty air filters.
  • 10 percent had low or contaminated brake fluid.
When should you check your vehicle ?

When you bring your vehicle in for service we run a 27 point inspection and inform you of any needed repairs, we are not just doing this to sell work, if we find that your vehicle is fine until the next visit our service advisors will let you know.

Our customer's are treated like family, we don't want Grandma riding on bad tires or with bad brakes, but if they are just low or have enough time left on them until the next regular scheduled service, we will let them know and remind then on the next visit.

The following list of services provided by CarCare.Org will help you keep your vehicle in top running condition and our techs check this list and more every time.

Services and Intervals Explained

Automatic Transmission Fluid

Check the fluid Level with the engine running and transmission in park. If low, add the type of automatic transmission fluid specified in the owners manual and/or on dipstick. For maximum performance, change every 2 years or 24,000 miles, or as directed in the owners manual.

Battery and Cables

Battery and cables should be securely mounted. Battery connections should clean, tight and corrosion free. If the battery is 3 years old or more it should be tested and replaced if necessary.

Belts, Serpentine, V and Timing

Check V belts and serpentine belts for looseness and condition. Replace when cracked, frayed, glazed or showing signs of excessive wear. Replace timing belts per interval specified in owner's manual. Typically this 60,000 to 90,000 miles.

*Not replacing the timing  belt as required could cause a breakdown or serious engine damage.

Brakes

Check the entire brake system every year, including brake linings, rotors and drums

Cabin Air Filter

Replace annually, or more often in areas with heavy airborne contaminants or whenever heating and cooling efficiency is reduced.

Chassis Lubrication

Many newer cars are Lubed for Life, some still require this service. Check the owners manual. Replacement steering and suspension components may require periodic lubrication.

Check Engine Light On

If the light comes while driving or remains on, your vehicle may have an emissions or sensor problem and should be analyzed. If the light flashes, the condition is more severe and must be checked immediately to prevent catalytic converter damage.

*Make sure that your vehicle is turned OFF when you are fueling. This can cause your check engine light to come on.

Cleaning and Polishing

To prevent stripping the vehicle's wax finish, use only automotive car wash products, not dishwashing liquids. Polish at least twice a year to maintain and protect the finish

Coolant (Anti-Freeze)

Check level at reservoir, Never open a hot radiator cap. If low, add a 50/50 mix of approved anti-freeze and distilled water. Change coolant annually on most vehicles.

Engine Air Filter

Inspect filter at each oil change. Replace annually or when leaking, torn, water or oil soaked, dirty or showing other signs of wear.

Engine Oil Filter

Check level with engine off at every fill up. For maximum engine life, change oil and filter every 3 months or 3000 miles, or as directed in your owners manual. Use specified oil grade and weight.

Exhaust

Inspect for leaks, damage and broken supports or hangers  If there is an unusual noise. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous and should be corrected without delay.

Fuel Filter

Inspect filter at every oil change. Replace if restricted or water contaminated or once a year on cars with carburetors. On fuel injected vehicles, replace filter every 24,000 miles or every 2 years.

Hoses

Inspect hoses at every oil change and replace when leaking, brittle, cracked, rusted, swollen or restricted.

Lights

Replace bulb immediately if light is out, check fuses first.

Power Steering Fluid

Inspect the fluid with the car warmed up. Add correct type of fluid, if low. If frequent topping off is required, inspect for leaks and replace if contaminated.

Steering and Suspension

Inspect system annually, including shock absorbers, struts and chassis parts, such as ball joints, tie rod ends and other related components. Replace if leaks, damage and loose mounting hardware are

Tire Inflation and Condition

Check the pressure of all tires, including the spare at every oil change. Check the tread for uneven or irregular wear and cuts or bruises along the sidewalls. Inflate tires and maintain at recommended pressure. Replace tires if worn or damaged.

Windshield Washer Fluid

Check fluid level monthly. Some vehicles have 2 reservoirs. Do not use water. Use washer fluid only.

Wiper Blades

Replace every 6 months or when cracked, cut , torn, streaking or chattering.

Are Dirty Cabin Air Filters Preventing You From Breathing Easily in Your Car?
During the hot summer months, contaminants, such as pollen, dust, mold spores and smog, can easily enter a vehicle's passenger compartment through the air conditioning, heating and ventilation systems, making the air in the car six times dirtier than the air outside, cautions the Car Care Council.

Motorists can protect themselves and their passengers from these containments by replacing the vehicle's cabin air filter annually or more often in areas with heavy containments, or whenever heating or cooling efficiency is reduced. Cabin air filters clean the incoming air and remove allergens - especially beneficial to people who suffer from allergies.

If your vehicle is model year 2000 or newer, there's a good chance it is equipped with a cabin air filter.

"There are about 30 million vehicles in North America that currently have cabin air filters," said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council. "However, most people have never heard of a cabin air filter or don't know if their vehicle is equipped with one. Vehicle owners should refer to their owners' manuals for this information."

If the cabin air filter is not replaced, it can cause musty odors in the vehicle, and over time, the heater and air conditioner may become damaged by corrosion. A dirty or clogged cabin air filter can also cause containments to become so concentrated in the cabin that passengers actually breathe in more fumes and particles when riding in the car compared to walking down the street.

Hot Weather the True Culprit Behind Car-Battery Trouble

Excessive heat and overcharging are the two main reasons for shortened battery life. Heat causes battery fluid to evaporate, this damaging the internal structure of the battery. A malfunctioning component in the charging system, usually the voltage regulator, allows too high a charging rate. That's slow death for a battery.

True, there are more road service calls in cold weather for dead batteries that cause starting failure. That's when a battery's output is diminished because of sluggish electro-chemical action that gives the battery its power. Also, colder temperatures increase thickness of the engine oil, making the engine harder to turn over. These factors lead to harder starting.

"An average of one out of four vehicles gets a new battery every year," said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council. "Sooner or later all batteries have to be replaced, but having to so prematurely can involve more than the cost of a road service call and a new battery, it can be inconvenient as well."

To get the most life out of a battery, White suggests the following:

  • Be sure the electrical system is charging at the correct rate; overcharging can damage a battery as quickly as undercharging.
  • If your battery is the type that needs to be topped off, check it regularly, especially in hot weather. Add distilled water when necessary.
  • Always replace a battery with one that's rated at least as high as the one originally specified.
  • Keep the top of the battery clean. Dirt becomes a conductor, which drains battery power. Further, as corrosion accumulates on battery terminals it becomes an insulator, inhibiting current flow.
